How To Keep Your Shower Glass Doors Clean [Step By Step Guide]

After you have been able to clean your shower glass door and get rid of the scum and dirt, you probably want to ensure that the scum does not return so quickly again.

One of our previous articles talks in detail about how you can get rid of all the stubborn scum and dirt that builds up in your shower when you do not clean it regularly.

To ensure that the scum does not return so quickly, you have to add your shower to your daily chores. It would help if you cleaned the shower regularly since you bathe there all the time.

So in this article, we will look at how you can keep your shower glass doors clean and sparkling.

You can clean the glass doors after each shower for about a minute or two. Doing this can help you work less during your weekly cleaning sessions.

So now, we will look at some of the ways you can keep your shower glass doors looking neat all the time.

Treating With A Commercial Product

There are several commercial shower sprays out there that you can choose from to keep your shower glass doors clean.

According to the instructions on their bottles, these products are known to prevent the buildup of scum on your shower glass doors.

These sprays also prevent the buildup of water stains on the glass doors. Before you use any of these products, you always have to follow the instructions printed on their containers to know how to apply them exactly.

However, you can use most of them to keep your shower looking clean when you use them daily after bathing in the shower.

These commercial spray products are used to prevent the buildup of scum on your shower glass doors, so you have to make sure that the shower’s interior is dried first before you spray them on the glass doors after each of your bathing sessions.

The treatment spray will prevent the scum from building up on the shower glass doors.

Mixing Your Shower Cleaner

If you do not feel like purchasing any commercial shower treatment products, you can decide to create your shower cleaning mixture in the house.

The mixing process is not hectic, and you will be done within a few minutes. For the container of the mixture, you will need to use a 32-ounce spray bottle.

Now pour a half cup of hydrogen peroxide and rub alcohol into the bottle. Now, you will have to add one teaspoon of the liquid dish soap to the mixture in the bottle.

After that, you fill the bottle with distilled water. You then gently agitate so that the content in it can get mixed. Do not try to shake the bottle because that will create foam.

You can also create a simpler daily shower cleaner with vinegar, dish soap, and some essential oils.

You will combine one cup of water with a half cup of white vinegar and a few drops of liquid dish soap.

After that, you add some drops of essential oils to the mixture. The drops should be between 10 and 20 drops and should not be below or above the number given.

The essential addition is to add some fragrance to the whole mixture. So you can choose the essential oils you prefer according to the fragrance you want in your glass cleaning mixture.

However, if you do not desire fragrance, you can decide to skip that part of the process, and you will still end up with your shower glass door cleaning mixture inside the bottle.

You should avoid using this mixture to clean your shower if you have a stone in your shower walls because there is vinegar in the mixture, and the vinegar could cause some damage to the stone.

To use this mixture, dry the interior of your shower entirely and spray the mixture on the dry glass with any of the above shower cleaning mixtures.

Either the commercial one you purchased or the homemade one you created yourself. The mixture will then reduce the scum on the glass as it dries.

The surface of the glass will also look sparkling. Doing this will help you keep the scum buildup under control until you carry out your weekly cleaning sessions in the bathroom.

Switching Soap

The scum that builds up on your shower glass doors typically comes from paraffin wax found in bar soap.

When the water reacts with the paraffin in the soap, the result is scum that builds upon the shower glass doors.

So if you have been using bar soap, you could consider switching to another type of soap to stop the water from reacting with the paraffin to create scum.

You can decide to go with a body wash or liquid to avoid the scum buildup in your shower. There are also some brands of bar soaps that do not have talc in them.

The talc also contributes to the buildup of scum in your shower. So in case, you want to keep using bar soap, then make sure to choose one that does not have talc in it.

Doing this will help reduce the scum that builds up in your shower.

Making Your Water Soft

If you live in a region with hard water, and you face other problems with the minerals, you can get a whole-home water softener for your house.

However, this option can be quite expensive to carry out. So before going ahead with it, you should try and verify if the hard water is also making things like washing and plumbing difficult.

If that is the case, you can go ahead with the whole house water softener project.

You will still have to conduct some cleaning of your shower every week as well. Changing the water from complicated to soft does not automatically mean that the scum will disappear.

However, you will have fewer stains caused by the hard water since you have now softened the water in your home.

Waterproofing Your Shower

Water causes stains, so you would want to get your shower treated with any product that will prevent the stains.

These products will prevent the water from staying on the surface of your shower glass. Some people use waterproofing products on the windshield of their cars.

The same can be done for the glass in your shower as well. When you purchase any product, you need to make sure that you follow the instructions written on the bottle to the letter.

Doing this will help you get the best out of the product and keep your shower waterproof. The products cause water, soap, and dirt to fall off the glass.

So the substances have to be able to stick to the glass to carry out their job of keeping the scum and stains off it.

You can go with this kind of treatment if you have a frameless shower to protect the glass, and it can also work on the glass in the framed shower.

However, you will need to keep the products away from metal frames and any tile or stone inside the shower.

You can find windshield water repellents from some physical auto stores and online. You can reuse any leftover product in the future, and you can use the product in your shower every three to four weeks.

Air It Out

When you get rid of the moisture on the glass in your shower, it will keep your shower protected from the stains caused by hard water.

One of the best ways to keep your shower glass door clean is to allow the bathroom to air out after each use.

You leave the shower door open for some time after each shower session and then run the vent in the bathroom for about 30 minutes.

Dry It Out

When you dry out your shower every time you use it, you prevent the buildup of stains caused by hard water.

You can do this by using a microfiber cloth or a squeegee.

Both of these can get the job done smoothly for you. However, you can also use the microfiber cloth to apply some cleaning agents to the glass when carrying out your weekly cleaning sessions in the shower.

Anytime you use the shower, wipe the glass with a microfiber cloth. The cloth can reach around the corners and under the door of the shower glass.

This makes the microfiber cloth an ideal cleaning tool for drying and cleaning your shower.

They are also a better alternative to disposable paper towels or any standard washcloth because it does not scratch the glass while you are wiping at it, and it does not leave any fiber behind.

After using it, you should wring out the water in the cloth and then lay it out to dry.

This will prevent any mildew from growing in the cloth due to moisture.

The microfiber cloths need to be washed once every week to keep them clean.

Apart from the microfiber cloth, you can also use the squeegee to get the water off your shower glass door after each shower session. There is no need to get a bigger one.

A handheld model would be ideal for the task, and they usually come with suction cups that you can hang in the shower.

You can show your family how to dry off the glass with either the microfiber cloth or the squeegee anytime they use the shower.

They should also leave the door open to allow moisture to evaporate out of the bathroom.

Conclusion

So these are the ways through which you can keep your bathroom free from moisture, stains, and scum.

Any of these methods can get the job done, or you can combine methods to arrive at a practical solution if your problem is more significant than average.
